If you’ve recently been happy with repair, renovation, carpentry, plumbing, electrical or other work done in your unit, please share their contact information. Important Recommendation: Prior to hiring someone to perform any renovation or repair work in your home, always follow best practices as outlined below:

Follow Key Steps to Select a Contractor:

Check the license: Confirm the contractor holds a valid local municipal business license and any required provincial, municipal credentials.

  • Verify insurance: Ask for proof of commercial general liability insurance (ideally at least $2 million) and active WorkSafeBC coverage to protect yourself from liability.

  • Check customer reviews and ratings: Look up the company profile on BBB.org to check their business rating, customer reviews, and any formal complaints. Inquire about company’s history. Check for registration with relevant professional trade associations

  • Obtain multiple quotations: Request at least three detailed, itemized written estimates rather than just comparing the bottom-line price.

  • Check references: Ask for recent local references and call past clients to ask about budget adherence, timelines, and quality of work.

  • Get a written contract: Ensure you have a signed contract detailing the full scope of work, timeline, payment schedule, and warranty before any work or deposits start.


Best practices for sourcing and evaluating renovation quotes:

1. Set Perimeters Before You Call

  • Write a detailed scope of work, identifying exactly what you want done.

  • Establish a firm budget range with a maximum spending limit, along with an additional 15% to 20% contingency fund to cover for unexpected issues


2. Source and Screen Contractors

  • Get at least three written quotes

  • Verify credentials up front: Ensure every contractor holds a valid trade license, active commercial general liability insurance, and Workers' Compensation coverage.

  • Check independent reviews: Look at third-party platforms like Google, TrustedPros, Houzz, or the Better Business Bureau (BBB) rather than just the testimonials on their own website.

3. Review and Compare Quotes / ensure you are comparing "apples to apples":

  • Look for an itemized pricing breakdown,

  • Look for detailed specs on materials,

  • Establish who will be responsible for obtaining and covering the cost of required permits.

  • Document an estimated start and finish date for the project

  • Discuss and settle disposal and clean up details

4. Finalizing the Agreement

  • Beware of suspiciously low bids.

  • Establish a payment schedule: Never pay 100% upfront. Write into the contract a 10% holdback until the job is fully completed and inspected.

  • Don’t let the work start until you have a legally binding contract signed by both parties.
